The following post was adjusted from a daily email sent by Coach Mac at BasketballforCoaches.com. He does a great job. Loved the email, but I wanted to adjust and add to it to use with my players as we go into the summer session. The items underlined are the additions I made. The rest of the content belongs to Coach Mac. The summer can determine where you end up as a player next season on your team. Coach Mac can be found on Twitter at @BballCoachMac He is worth the follow.
When players sign up for a basketball team, only two things are mandatory: 1. Attending games. 2. Attending team practices and events. That's it. But there are a bunch of 'optional' extras that players have a choice whether to do or not. Here's a quick list: 1. Getting 8 hours of sleep every night? 2. Studying game film to improve your basketball IQ? 3. Dedicating time in the weight room to improve strength and explosiveness? 4. Getting to practice early to work on your free-throws? 5. Staying after practice to work on outside shooting and conditioning? 6. Completing a 'driveway workout' when you can't get to the gym? 7. Eating healthy food to make sure your body is ready to compete? 8. Working out with a focus instead of simply going through the motions? There are, however, some things also that are not guaranteed. Here’s a quick list: 1. Great personal performance 2. Playing time 3. Starting job 4. Championships 5. Awards 6. Play at the next level And here's the secret... The players who end up being the most successful are those who make the 'optional' tasks mandatory tasks. The things found on the not guaranteed list can also possibly become reality if the optional list is made mandatory.
